Built in 1914, The Panama Canal connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. It runs across the Isthmus of Panama, a narrow strip of land that separates the Caribbean sea and Pacific Ocean, and is approximately 50 miles long. The canal was constructed to eliminate the need for ships and vessels having to navigate around South America which shortened the shipping routes between the Americas, Asia, and Australia by half.

Construction of the Panama Canal began in 1881 by Frenchman Ferdinand de Lesseps (who built the Suez Canal) and was a huge technical challenge. It involved digging through a long stretch of humid jungle that was infested with mosquitoes and yellow fever, and after years of struggle the project was abandoned by the French in 1889. The United States took on the project in May 1904 after purchasing the equipment and excavations for $40 million and completed the canal in 1914.
